FK Architecture Women Build 2022

FK Architecture Partners with Habitat for Humanity Seminole-Apopka Women Build 2022

For the fifth year in a row, we partnered with Habitat for Humanity Seminole-Apopka to participate in the 2022 Women Build, a program focused on building, investing, fundraising, and advocating for quality, affordable housing in Central Florida. Led by Kimberly Hellekson, Managing Principal at FK, the firm joined other women builders over six weeks to build two homes located at 1577 and 1581 Dixie Way in Sandford, FL. A virtual celebration was held on September 15, 2022, for the new home buyers Jessica Rodriguez-Garcia and Debbie Spoto.

“Partnering with Habitat Seminole-Apopka has become an annual tradition for FK, and we couldn’t be more proud of the work we accomplished together and bringing these homes from concept to reality,” said Kimberly. “We are thrilled for the new homebuyers and are committed to helping our community grow and prosper.”

One-in-six Floridians face unaffordable housing costs every month, and our partnership with Habitat for Humanity is a sure way to combat this issue. The housing market is experiencing a rapid rise in costs, and the need for affordable housing is more significant and urgent than ever before. Women have shown up in record numbers to support each other, with 95% of the project leadership and participation coming from female builders, designers, and architects.

At FK, we pride ourselves on designing affordable housing projects across the U.S. We understand the current shortage of quality affordable housing and are dedicated to finding solutions to decrease this disparity. Throughout this year, rent prices have spiked up to 20 percent, construction costs have increased, and inventory has become scarce. That is why we have been longstanding partners with Habitat for Humanity to help raise funds and provide affordable housing opportunities in the local community that has given so much to us.

We must step in and find ways to navigate the financial, legal, and environmental challenges causing this housing crisis.
